Nagpur: Religious preacher Dhirendra Krishna Shastri has sparked controversy after making remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Samarth Ramdas during a public speech in Nagpur on Thursday.
Speaking at an event, Shastri claimed that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, after fighting many battles, had offered his kingdom to Samarth Ramdas, saying he was tired and wanted the saint to take charge for some time.
The statement has drawn criticism and is likely to trigger strong reactions, as it touches upon a sensitive and widely respected historical legacy.
The remarks were made during the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the proposed Bharat Durga Temple in Jamtha. The event was attended by several prominent figures, including RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Several religious leaders were also present on the occasion.
The controversy centres around Shastri’s narration of an alleged historical interaction between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Samarth Ramdas. Critics argue that such claims are not supported by established historical records and misrepresent widely accepted accounts.

Apart from this, another statement by Shastri has also drawn attention. Addressing the audience, he said that Hindus should have four children and dedicate one child to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The remark has raised questions amid ongoing debates around population control and the role of religious leaders in making such appeals.
There has been no official response yet from authorities or organisations present at the event. The issue is expected to escalate as political and social reactions emerge.
