After The Free Press Journal published a story highlighting how the Eastern Freeway — a crucial link between south Mumbai and Ghatkopar — has become a death trap at night due to non-functional streetlights, concerned citizens took to social media to express their outrage. Many users flagged the serious risk posed to motorists and commuters, especially with near-total darkness along stretches of the freeway after sundown.
X was soon flooded with grievances, not only about the Eastern Freeway but also about several other spots across Mumbai where streetlights have been defunct for years. Residents questioned the inaction of civic authorities despite repeated complaints and the danger these dark patches pose to public safety.
The situation becomes even more risky during the monsoon season, when heavy rains, low visibility, and waterlogging further compromise road safety. Citizens stressed that without proper lighting, navigating such conditions becomes life-threatening.
Many have demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other relevant bodies conduct prompt investigations and ensure streetlights are repaired or replaced on priority. With the monsoon increasing, people fear that delays in addressing this issue could lead to more accidents and potential loss of life.
Here are some reactions.
