A traffic police constable attached to the Kharghar traffic unit was dragged on the bonnet of a car for almost 500 meters on Saturday morning after he asked the car’s driver to stop the vehicle for violating traffic norms, police said. The driver of the car was taken into custody soon after he stopped the car.

Kharghar police have registered a case against the car driver for an alleged attempt to murder and arrested him. He was identified as Akash Jangir, a resident of sector 8 in Kharghar.

Police said the incident took place between 10 and 11 am at the Kopra bridge near Sion-Panvel highway in Kharghar when a traffic cop identified as Namdev Gadekar, 32, asked the car driver to stop the car for driving on the wrong side.

Police said that he initially stopped the car and again started to flee. However, traffic constable Gadekar kept asking him to stop the car. But instead of stopping the car, he continued driving. “Gadekar who was standing in front of the car held the bonnet tightly and dragged up to Swarn Ganga jeweller at sector 15 on Gharkul Road in Kharghar which is around 500 to 600 meters from the traffic bandobast location,” said an on-duty police official.

Sandipan Shinde, a senior police inspector from Kharghar police station said that the accused driver has been arrested. “He was brought in by police officials deputed at the bandobast at the police station,” said Shinde, adding that the car driver works in a private company.

Meanwhile, the video of the incident recorded by other motorists went viral. A car that was behind the car overtook the accused’s car and stopped in front of his vehicle, forcing him to stop the car. Meanwhile, police personnel coming from behind took custody of the accused.

The Kharghar police registered a case against the car driver under sections 307 and 353 of IPC and the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
