Two drown at abandoned quarry in Dahisar, bodies recovered

Two young men drowned at the site of an abandoned quarry in Dahisar on Tuesday evening. While one of the bodies has been found and identified, the authorities are still searching for the other body.

The body of the second of the two youths was pulled out of the water on Wednesday. The deceased, Ajay Jogdand, 25, was rushed to the Shatabdi Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.

Shekhar Vishwakarma's body was found on Tuesday evening itself.

According to the Dahisar police, the incident occurred at around 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday, in the midst of the heavy rains lashing the city. The police said that a group of seven young men in their early twenties had come to the spot, and that they had consumed alcohol at the time.

"There are some abandoned quarries at the very edge of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, with pits as deep as 40 feet which get filled with water during the monsoons. The locals are well aware of the risks involved, but the victims are residents of Gorai and had come to enjoy the rains. They entered the water-filled pit and two of them drowned," said senior police inspector Pravin Patil, Dahisar police station.

The other boys raised an alarm and called the police as well as the fire brigade, after which a search and rescue operation was launched.

Civic officials said that one of the victims, identified as Shekhar Vishwakarma (19), was pulled out of the water and rushed to the Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, where he was declared dead before admission. The search is still underway for the other victim, who has been identified as Sanjay Jogdand (23)

"An Accidental Death Report has been registered in connection with the incident," Patil said.
