Mumbai: The steel framework consists of four massive steel beams that stand 14 meters tall and have a weight of 325 tons. On Friday night, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) placed a 48-meter-long steel span at Kapurbawadi Junction on Metro Line 4, connecting Wadala and Kasarvadavli.
As per officials, the crucial section was installed over the busy Ghodbunder Road within two nights, without disrupting traffic flow. The new structure is situated at the elevated area of the corridor and was designed to bridge a complex intersection surrounded by existing flyovers. To ensure minimal disruption, the contractors utilized 700-ton and 550-ton cranes, along with backup cranes, trailers, and a safety team of over 100 engineers and laborers.
The structure consists of four large steel girders that stand 14 meters tall and weigh 325 tonnes. The authorities credited the seamless execution of this high-precision task to the collaboration between various government departments.
“An MMRDA official stated, ‘We appreciate all the government authorities and agencies that provided their invaluable guidance and support, which was essential for the successful and safe completion of this demanding project.’ With this installation, all special steel spans from Majiwada to Kasarvadavli are now finished.”

Metro Line 4, spanning over 32.32 kilometres and featuring 32 stations, aims to enhance east-west connectivity in Mumbai. It will link Wadala in the southern-central part of the city with Kasarvadavli in Thane, going through key locations such as Chembur, Ghatkopar, Mulund, and Thane.
MMRDA announced that 84.5 percent of the construction for this line has been completed. The installation of the steel span keeps the schedule for the corridor's commissioning in Phase 1. Once finished, the corridor will significantly reduce travel time between the eastern suburbs and Thane.
