Thane News: Virar Resident Duped Of ₹79,000 In Credit Card Scam, Cyber Police Recover Full Amount

Palghar: In a prompt and efficient action by the Cyber Police Station under the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar Police Commissionerate, a local resident who was duped of ₹79,000 through a fake credit card limit enhancement link has successfully recovered the full amount.

The complainant, identified as Kakade, a resident under the jurisdiction of the Mira Road Police Station, was targeted by an unidentified fraudster who contacted him on his mobile phone claiming to offer an increase in his credit card payment limit. The scammer sent a malicious link, asking him to click on it to avail the service.

Upon clicking the link, the complainant received a message informing him that a sum had been deducted from his credit card account. Realizing he had been defrauded, he immediately filed a complaint with the Cyber Police Station. The complaint was registered on July 28, 2025, on the NCCRP Portal, and also recorded internally.

During the preliminary investigation, it was found that the fraud had been committed via an online ticket booking app, which was unknowingly downloaded through the malicious link. This app had access to the complainant’s mobile data and was used to siphon off the money.

Cyber officials swiftly began tracing the transaction path and contacted the involved platform on the same day. Persistent follow-up communications were carried out over the next three days, eventually leading to the cancellation of the fraudulent transaction and the refund of the entire ₹79,000 directly to the complainant’s original account.

The Cyber Police Station has issued the following public advisory to prevent online scams:

Bank employees never ask for sensitive information such as account numbers, OTPs, or card details via SMS or phone.

Do not click on links received from unknown or suspicious sources.

Always verify apps before downloading and avoid apps from unverified links.

Do not share personal or financial details with unknown callers or mobile numbers.

In case of online fraud, immediately contact your bank and report the incident.
