Stalled Permits, Rising Fury: Navi Mumbai Hawkers Threaten Hunger Strike

Over 200 hawkers from Vashi, Sanpada, and Turbhe have announced an indefinite hunger strike starting January 15, citing the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) failure to address grievances related to permits and designated business spaces.

“The responsibility for the situation lies with municipal officials, including the city engineer, ward officers, and the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 1), who have not fulfilled their duties,” said Navi Mumbai Hawkers Workers Union president, Sayyed Peer Fakhira. He warned that any incidents during the hunger strike would be the officials’ responsibility.

The demands include issuing valid permits to 250-300 surveyed vendors, providing e-toilets, temporary sheds, and seating arrangements, and rehabilitating 34 licensed vendors displaced in 1993 due to roadwork.

Fakhira also criticised the inaction against unauthorised vendors from areas like Govandi and Cheeta Camp, who occupy city streets, inconvenience citizens, and affect registered vendors’ businesses. He urged stringent action against illegal hawkers.
