Mumbai: Massive passenger chaos was witnessed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on December 3 after several IndiGo flights were hit by significant delays and cancellations. According to a PTI report, the disruption was just not limited to Mumbai, as multiple IndiGo flights across various airports nationwide experienced delays as the airline allegedly struggled with crew shortage.
According to CNBC Tv 18, about 32 flights, including 16 departures and arrivals were cancelled at Mumbai airport today due to acute crew shortage, adding that over 130 flights faced cancellation across major airports.
While citing sources, PTI reported that the carrier cancelled over 70 flights today, including those from Bengaluru and Mumbai airports. The airline spokesperson stated multiple reasons for the delay and cancellation. "A multitude of unforeseen operational challenges including minor technology glitches, schedule changes linked to the winter season, adverse weather conditions, increased congestion in the aviation system and the implementation of updated crew rostering rules (Flight Duty Time Limitations) had a negative compounding impact on our operations in a way that was not feasible to be anticipated."
It further said, "To contain the disruption and restore stability, we have initiated calibrated adjustments to our schedules. These measures will remain in place for the next 48 hours and will allow us to normalise our operations and progressively recover our punctuality across the network."
The carrier stated that the affected customers are also being offered alternate travel arrangements or refunds.
Meanwhile this came a day after check-in systems of Air India and other airlines faced glitches due to a third party system disruption at various airports, resulting in flight delays on Tuesday evening. The problem persisted for at least 45 minutes before getting addressed, one of the sources said.
"A third-party system disruption has been affecting check-in systems at various airports, resulting in delays across multiple airlines, including Air India," Air India said in a post on X at 9.49 pm.
