Marking Holi with a social message, the Patrakar Mitra Association once again carried forward its unique initiative, “One Puran Poli for the Poor,” distributing festive sweets to underprivileged and destitute residents across Panvel.
Turning Prasad into Purpose
The initiative, conceptualised by Association President Keval Mahadik nine years ago, seeks to discourage the practice of offering puran poli into the Holi bonfire as ritual prasad, which often leads to food wastage. Instead, the association channels the festive delicacy towards feeding those who cannot afford sweets during the festival.
“In a time of rising inflation, many poor families struggle to afford even basic meals, let alone festive treats. Our aim is to ensure that every needy person gets to taste something sweet on Holi,” members of the association said.

Distribution Across Panvel
This year, as in previous years, volunteers distributed puran poli to the needy in Panvel, New Panvel and Takkā areas. The campaign highlights the contrast between food wastage during celebrations and the reality of hunger faced by many, especially on festive days.
By promoting the message that food should nourish the hungry rather than be wasted in ritual offerings, the initiative continues to blend festive celebration with social responsibility, reinforcing the spirit of sharing and compassion during Holi.
