Navi Mumbai: A 30-year-old man, Mohammad Jafar Zuber Qureshi, died late Thursday night after being detained by CBD Belapur Police for alleged drug use during a special anti-narcotics drive. The preliminary cause of death is suspected to be a heart attack. His body has been sent to Mumbai’s J.J. Hospital for postmortem to confirm the exact cause.
Qureshi, a resident of Shahbaz village in CBD Belapur, was among 15 individuals detained by the police during the day-long operation on June 27, which targeted drug users and dealers in the area. He was caught near Gayatri Company at Uran Phata while allegedly consuming marijuana.
All those detained were taken to the municipal hospital in Vashi for medical examination. While most were released after the check-up, Qureshi and another detainee requested police to drop them off under a bridge in CBD Belapur. During transit, Qureshi began to feel unwell near Belapur Khindi. Police rushed him to MGM Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Crime Inspector Arun Pawar confirmed that an accidental death report (ADR) has been registered. "Qureshi's postmortem will determine the final cause of death. It was revealed that Qureshi had experienced chest pain two days prior but had ignored the symptoms, suggesting a possible heart-related complication," a police officer from CBD Belapur police station said.
Meanwhile, police continue their special anti-drug campaign in Navi Mumbai. The operation aims to curb the sale, possession, and consumption of narcotics.
