Mumbai: A 61-year-old man fell prey to scammers in insurance fraud and lost over Rs 7 lakh. According to the police, the complainant is a resident of Navi Mumbai and works in a private company as an IT manager. In September 2023, the complainant received a phone call from a person who claimed to be from the insurance ombudsman's office.
The caller informed him that his previously closed life insurance policy had matured for which the complainant would get Rs 10 lakh. The caller told the complainant that he would have to pay the renewal fee, registration fee and stamp duty to claim the amount.
In the past, one policy of the complainant had stopped, and this time he assumed that the caller was discussing the same policy. Thereafter between September 2023 and March 2024, the complainant was induced to transfer Rs 7.09 lakh in different beneficiary bank accounts shared by the scammer. Despite having paid the amount, when the complainant did not get the ‘policy amount’, he confronted the scammer, who instead asked him to pay more money.
