Flyers at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) can now experience a fresh showcase of India’s rich heritage, innovation, and cultural identity through a newly presented art exhibition at the existing ‘The ArtBeat of New India’ museum at Terminal 2. The latest exhibition has been unveiled as part of the World Heritage Day celebrations.
The museum, which is already one of the world’s largest public art programmes at an airport, now features an expanded collection designed to transform the conventional airport experience into an immersive cultural journey.
Waiting at airports can get monotonous but is inevitable before boarding our flights. However, CSMIA has added this special exhibition at T2, stretching across a 3.2-kilometre corridor in the Departure and Arrival areas, beating the conventional airport experience.
The museum at CSMIA stretches across a 3.2-kilometre corridor at the Departure and Arrival areas of Terminal 2, offering 24x7 access to passengers. Spanning over 2 lakh square feet, the museum highlights more than 5,500 artefacts and over 100 art installations, from ancient motifs to modern expressions. Each of these installations reflect India’s rich heritage, artistic traditions, and contemporary creativity.
The installations at the exhibition are curated into thematic zones, representing a vibrant journey through different regions and artistic traditions of India. The installations include a tribute to hand-painted theatre screens once seen across Maharashtra, this evocative montage captures a fading art form that once graced drama stages and photography studios. Similarly, the Mumbai-inspired installation transforms discarded materials into striking, thought-provoking art pieces.

The airport also offers the ‘The Artbeat of New India’ audio guide app, providing insights into the artworks and the stories behind them. This is not only aimed at beautifying the terminal but also serves as a platform to celebrate and preserve India’s diverse art forms.
“In a world where airports are often rushed and clinical, CSMIA dares to be different by inviting travellers to relax and engage with something deeper and closer to India’s cultural roots. With every corridor turned into a gallery and every waiting moment transformed into an artistic encounter, CSMIA ensures that every journey begins and ends with a tribute to India’s cultural legacy. At CSMIA, every takeoff begins with a touch of timeless India,” said a spokesperson of CSMIA.
