Mumbai updates: WR launches pilot project to generate wind energy; turbines to be placed along tracks | FPJ
WR to generate wind energy with turbines along track
Western Railway (WR) authorities have decided to install two wind turbines near Bhayandar to produce energy using the velocity of trains. Keeping in mind the large number of trains in the suburban section, WR decided to set up two wind turbines on a pilot project basis, and if successful, the project will be tried across the suburban section in the future.
"The Mumbai suburban section of WR witnesses more that a thousand train services daily, with a high frequency, especially during peak hours. This will definitely increase the energy production capacity of the turbines," a WR official said, adding that the approximate cost of this pilot project, to be completed within a month, is Rs 10 lakh.

BMC proposes single planning body for bad roads
Aiming to find a permanent solution for the fierce criticism hurled at it for bad roads, the BMC made several suggestions during the hearing of several public interest litigation (PILs) filed at the Bombay High Court against the pothole menace.
The civic body, after specifying that some roads fall under the management of agencies like the airport authority, Mumbai Port Trust, etc, proposed proposed to have a single planning body which will have an overarching say on the issue of poor roads.
During its presentation before the HC, the BMC averred that the aforementioned agencies give the least priority to the repairing of roads coming under their belt.
Just because of their lackadaisical approach, the civic body always gets an earful from citizens, said the BMC. To avoid such negligence, it proposed that all the road infra, including flyovers and bridges, should be handed over to the BMC for maintenance purposes. To recover the cost of repairs, the construction agencies should give advertisement rights to the BMC, it added.
