Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Airport Customs on Saturday arrested two persons for smuggling 8.155kg of hydroponic weed, valued at Rs 8.15 crore, from Bangkok. The agency is investigating the source of the narcotics and the intended recipient in Mumbai.

According to Customs department sources, AIU officers intercepted two passengers, SM Vadhiya and NH Raval, upon their arrival at CSMI Airport from Bangkok, based on profiling that suggested they might be carrying narcotics. After examining their baggage, officers found packets containing a green, dry leafy substance.

When questioned, the passengers identified it as ‘Ganja.’ The substance tested positive for hydroponic weed, a narcotic under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Statement Of A Customs Official

“Preliminary investigations and their statements indicate the involvement of other persons who are yet to be traced. The investigations in the case are at a very preliminary stage and efforts are also being made to identify and apprehend key associates of the accused,” said a Customs official.
