Mumbai: The post-mortem report of a 35-year-old man has revealed a sordid tale of betrayal, deceit and murder. Irfan Shah, a resident of the Bainganwadi area in Govandi, was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar on Saturday night by his 32-year-old wife Nazira, who claimed she had found him lying unconscious on the floor when she came back home. However, as per the autopsy report, he was stabbed to death, following which the wife and her paramour, Sadre Alam, 33, have been arrested.

The doctors examined Irfan and declared him dead before admission, following which the Shivaji Nagar police filed an accidental death report and initiated an investigation.

Senior police inspector Arjun Rajane said that only one external injury was visible on Irfan’s chest and the cause of death was not clear. He said, “We decided to wait for the autopsy report before taking further action. The report arrived on Sunday, stating that there were two other smaller injuries on his torso, which were hidden due to his body hair.”

The police picked up both Nazira and Alam for inquiries. After several hours of sustained questioning, the duo allegedly confessed to killing Irfan. As per the duo’s statement, they were having an affair for the last two months. Alam frequented Nazira in Irfan’s absence, who knew about it. This led to repeated arguments between the couple.

Rajane said that on Saturday, Irfan had a heated argument with his wife, which angered Alam who confronted Irfan, who further assaulted Alam. In the meantime, Nazira picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed Irfan in the chest, Rajane said.

The duo took Irfan to the hospital and tried to pass off his death as a natural one. Alam was placed under arrest late on Sunday night, while Nazira was issued a notice, asking her to be present at the police station on Monday, as a female accused cannot be arrested after sundown. Both of them have been charged with murder and giving false information about an offence under the Indian Penal Code, officials said.
