Mumbai Police to question Nupur Sharma over controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammed

Mumbai: Even though former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson has apologised for her recent remarks and also faced action from the party, her troubles are likely to multiply soon, with the Mumbai Police acting on a complaint registered against her.

Sharma had last month made derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed, sparking off nationwide outrage that soon spilled over to other countries as well. She was subsequently booked by the Pydhonie police for hurting religious sentiments under the Indian Penal Code, after a complaint was received against her from the Raza Academy.

Speaking about the status of the case, Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey said, “We will soon be issuing a summons to Sharma asking her to present herself for questioning in connection with the case.”

Sharma was on Sunday suspended from her post by the BJP after mounting pressure from several countries about her Islamophobic remarks. The BJP also issued a statement condemning her actions. Sharma herself also released a statement apologising for her remarks, which had been made during a live news channel debate.

Apart from the Pydhonie police in Mumbai, the Mumbra police in Thane have also registered a similar FIR against her.

Pandey made the statement at a media interaction during the inauguration of his new chambers at the Mumbai Police headquarters. The top cop also fielded queries on a lot of other subjects related to crime and law and order.

During the interaction, Pandey once again refuted all allegations of the Mumbai Police's action against politicians like Kirit Somaiya and Navneet Rana being motivated by political pressure from the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

“When we receive a complaint, we have to act on it. Our actions were only motivated by the law, and nothing else. Every legal procedure was adhered to in all the cases,” the top cop said.
