Mumbai News: MNLU Registrar Files Complaint After Students Receive Fraudulent Emails From Fake Vice-Chancellor ID

Mumbai: A case of cyber fraud has been registered at the South Region Cyber Police Station following a complaint filed by Dr. Pratapsingh Bhimsen Salunke, on behalf of Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU). Dr. Salunke, the Registrar (I/c) of MNLU Mumbai, reported the incident.

According to the complaint, an unidentified person created a fake email ID – susieq10@optimum.net – impersonating the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Dilip Ukey. The impersonator allegedly used this fraudulent ID to contact students of MNLU with the intent to deceive and commit fraud, making it appear as though the communication was officially from the Vice-Chancellor himself.

The accused reportedly reached out to both university-issued and private email addresses of several students, attempting to engage them through deceptive communication. Based on the complaint, the South Cyber Police have registered an FIR under Section 419(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66(C) of the Information Technology Act. An investigation is currently underway to identify and locate the perpetrator.

According to sources, Dr. Salunke, a resident of South Mumbai, approached the South Region Cyber Police Station and lodged an official complaint. Police have initiated an investigation to trace the unidentified sender and ascertain the motive behind the impersonation.
