Mumbai News: BMC Cracks Down On Abandoned Vehicles, Over 1,900 Towed Across City
The BMC has initiated action to remove abandoned and scrap vehicles left illegally on public roads. A notices have been issued to 3,153 vehicle owners under Section 314 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888. Additionally, 1,927 abandoned and scrap vehicles have been towed and relocated to the contractor’s yard for further processing.

Mumbai: The BMC has initiated action to remove abandoned and scrap vehicles left illegally on public roads. A notices have been issued to 3,153 vehicle owners under Section 314 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888. Additionally, 1,927 abandoned and scrap vehicles have been towed and relocated to the contractor’s yard for further processing.
Thousands of Abandoned Vehicles Identified
To decongest city roads, the BMC has appointed three contractors to remove abandoned vehicles. Once a complaint is received, a 72-hour notice is issued to the vehicle owner. If the vehicle is not removed within this period, it will be towed to a contractor’s yard.
Towing and Disposal Process Underway
After 30 days, the vehicle will be disposed of, and no claims will be entertained thereafter. To tackle the growing menace of abandoned vehicles, the BMC has identified over 4,325 such vehicles across the city in the last few months.
City-Wide Coverage
A total of 833 abandoned vehicles were found in the island city, out of which 502 owners were served notices and 147 vehicles were towed. In the Eastern suburbs, 1,440 abandoned vehicles were identified, with 1,130 notices issued and 740 vehicles towed.
