Mumbai Lake Levels: Water Stock Dips Marginally To 88.50% Amid Consistent Yet Low Rainfall

Mumbai: Mumbai's water stock witnessed a marginal decline on Friday morning despite rainfall across the catchment areas over the last 24 hours. According to the BMC's Hydraulic Engineer's Department, the seven lakes supplying drinking water to the city collectively hold 12,80,931 million litres of usable water, which is 88.50 per cent of their total live storage capacity.

On Thursday, the city's water stock was recorded at 88.76 per cent, indicating a slight decrease of 0.26 percentage points in a day. The report, prepared at 6 am on August 7, shows that while rainfall continued across all lake catchments, the overall storage registered a marginal dip.

Among the reservoirs, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi lakes remain completely full at 100 per cent capacity. Tansa is at 98.69 per cent, Middle Vaitarna at 90.39 per cent, Bhatsa at 86.21 per cent, and Upper Vaitarna at 79.26 per cent of their live storage capacity.

The catchment areas received fresh rainfall during the past 24 hours, with Upper Vaitarna receiving 31 mm, Modak Sagar 12 mm, Tansa 3 mm, Middle Vaitarna 11 mm, Bhatsa 7 mm, Vihar 4 mm, and Tulsi 6 mm.

As per the BMC, Vihar and Tulsi lakes have been overflowing since July 7, while Tansa started overflowing on July 22 and Modak Sagar on July 23, helping maintain healthy water reserves for Mumbai despite the slight decline in overall storage.

Mumbai's Weather Update

Meanwhile, Mumbai is expected to witness moderate rain and overcast skies on Friday as monsoon conditions persist across the city. The IMD has not issued any weather alert, while official data showed the Air Quality Index remained in the 'Good' category with a reading of 27.
