Mumbai: BMC to spend Rs. 374 crore on new RoB connecting Dadar East and West

Mumbai: A new rail-over-bridge (RoB) parallel to Tilak Bridge at Dadar will replace the British-era steel girder bridge which is in a dilapidated condition. The bridge is being constructed by Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (Maharail) and geotechnical work, shifting of utilities at the site and test pile work has been completed

According to BMC's additional municipal commissioner P Velrasu, the civic body has requested Maharail to construct the bridge and BMC will spend Rs374 crore on the project. To avoid traffic problems the old Tilak Bridge will be demolished after the construction of the new one, which will take two and half years.

There are 29 RoBs that are in dangerous condition and the BMC has taken up repair and reconstruction of these bridges. One of them is the Dadar Tilak bridge which is crucial for traffic movement. It connects Dadar East and Dadar West, and provides major connectivity to the traffic from Lower Parel, Prabhadevi and Worli to the Eastern Express Highway.

New bridge will be constructed will be like the Bandra Worli Sea Link

The new bridge will be constructed on cable-based technology like the Bandra Worli Sea Link. It will be constructed in 2 phases. The total length of the bridge will be 663m and the cable will cover 190m of the bridge area. It will be 16.7m wide and have four lanes on each side. Maharail has planned to install signature theme lighting on the bridge with a provision of 'selfie' points to enhance the aesthetic appeal.
