Mumbai: BMC Collects 11.4 Metric Tons Of Waste After New Year 2025 Celebrations At Marine Drive, Gateway Of India And Beaches

Mumbai: In light of the large gatherings of citizens at Marine Drive, Gateway of India, Girgaon Chowpatty, and other public places to celebrate the arrival of the New Year, the BMC launched an extensive cleanliness drive starting Tuesday night. On Wednesday, the workers of the Solid Waste Department successfully cleared 11.4 metric tons of waste.

On the eve of the New Year, numerous people gathered at various beaches, parks, and public spaces in Mumbai on December 31. This often led to significant littering, plastic waste, and overall mess.

To tackle this, the civic body initiated special cleanliness efforts at prominent locations including the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Girgaon Chowpatty, Byculla Zoo Junction, Kalanagar Junction, Bandra Station area, Juhu Chowpatty, Gorai Chowpatty, Borivali market area, Aksa Chowpatty, Marve Chowpatty, and Mankhurd, among other key spots.

A team of 5,000, including civic officials, laborers, staff, and volunteers from various organisations, participated in the drive. A total of 70 types of machinery were deployed, such as litter pickers, JCBs, dumpers, beach cleaning equipment, Bobcats, e-sweepers, misting machines, and compactors. This collective effort resulted in the collection of 11.4 metric tons of waste.

Meanwhile, adequate lighting arrangements, barricades, seven watch towers were erected at Marine Drive, and four at the Gateway of India. "During the night shift, mist vehicles and litter pickers, along with JCBs and dumpers, were deployed in these areas. The entire area has been cleaned and restored to its original state providing a pleasant experience for the citizens," said a senior civic official.
