Mumbai: Aaditya Thackeray inaugurates 'Solid waste management vision 2030' project

Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday inaugurated 'Solid waste management vision 2030' project. While addressing BMC officers Aditya said, "There are 25 thousand employees in the solid waste management department of BMC. These workers work day and night to clean the city. These are the people who put their life in danger to keep Mumbai clean during Covid-19 period. BMC's fight against Covid-19 was praised by the world on the same grounds BMC will again be considered as a model city on solid waste management," Aditya added.

BMC is running many projects to keep Mumbai clean and hygienic. Hence, BMC has succeeded in reducing four metric tonne garbage in the last five years. In the year 2017-18, Mumbai used to generate 10 thousand metric tonne garbage; that number has gone down to six thousand tonnes. Because of administration efforts BMC could reduce the Solid waste.

Meanwhile, BMC has decided to reduce carbon emissions in the city. BMC has decided to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent. Additional Municipal Commissioner, Dr. Sanjiv Kumar, Solid waste management Deputy Commissioner, Sangita Hasnale, Chief Engineer of SWM, Bharat Torne and Manish Pimple were also present during the ceremony.

Aditya Thackeray also directed Officers to implement such policy that garbage bins should not be seen on the footpaths and people shall not hold handkerchiefs on the nose. Officers should think that garbage should be lifted twice in a day. BMC should include citizens and shopkeepers in the movement.

From October 02, 2017, BMC has undertaken efforts to reduce garbage. BMC had put compulsion on every society to manage garbage. BMC also made it compulsory to societies which have 20 thousand sq.metre area and societies which generate 100 k.g. waste should make arrangements for disposal of garbage in the premises. BMC also encourages citizens to segregate garbage and make manure out of wet waste.
