Mumbai: A 58-year-old pedestrian was killed after being knocked down by a speeding dumper on Barrister Nath Pai Road in Mazgaon on the night of August 22. The Byculla police have arrested the dumper driver in connection with the accident.

According to the FIR, the incident occurred at around 9.52 pm near the New Naralwadi Bridge on Barrister Nath Pai Road. The victim, identified as Laxmibai Narsana Kopul, a resident of Pratiksha Nagar, Sion Koliwada, was walking along the road when the dumper (MH 01 EE 1643), allegedly travelling at high speed, hit her and fled the spot.

Local residents chased the dumper and managed to intercept it around half a kilometre away in the direction of Reay Road railway station. They alerted the police, following which Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Anil Gorakshnath Sangle, 52, attached to Byculla police station, reached the spot along with his team.

Police found Kopul lying unconscious in a pool of blood on the road. She had sustained severe injuries after the vehicle's wheels reportedly ran over her right leg and head. She was immediately taken to Sir J.J. Hospital on a stretcher from the Byculla Mobile 01 police vehicle. Doctors declared her dead before admission.

Police questioned eyewitnesses at the scene, who told them that the dumper had struck the woman while she was walking and that local residents had stopped the driver along with the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Kumar Horilal Gupta, 47, a resident of Kadri Mansion on Veer Savarkar Road, Prabhadevi, was taken into custody by the police.

A case has been registered against Gupta under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act, based on a complaint filed by ASI Sangle.

Police have alleged that Gupta was driving the dumper recklessly and negligently on a public road, hit Kopul and, instead of providing her with medical assistance, fled the scene, thereby causing her death. Further investigation is underway.
