The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) has stepped up work on two new EMU carsheds at Bhivpuri and Vangaon, part of efforts to expand maintenance infrastructure for Mumbai’s suburban railway network under MUTP-IIIA. While land for the proposed Bhivpuri facility has been fully acquired and major earthwork completed, the Vangaon project has moved ahead with forest clearance and land acquisition processes.

Bhivpuri Carshed Land Acquisition Completed, Earthwork Progresses

At Bhivpuri, the proposed carshed requires 45.24 hectares, including 42.28 hectares of private land and 2.96 hectares of government land. The entire land has been acquired. Work gained momentum after the contract for land development, bridge extensions, boundary walls, drainage and road works was awarded in August 2025. About 7.16 lakh cubic metres of earthwork has been completed. Drone and DGPS surveys and geotechnical investigations are also over, while retaining wall work is underway. Approvals for the bridge General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) and the Engineering Scale Plan (ESP) of the carshed are under process.

Forest Clearance Process Continues For Vangaon Project

The Vangaon carshed will require around 43.68 hectares. Acquisition of the entire 3.64 hectares of private land has progressed, with compensation deposited for disbursement to landowners. The remaining land is forest land. The project received Stage-I in-principle forest clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in February 2026, while the Stage-II clearance is currently under process.

New Facilities Part Of Larger Plan To Expand EMU Maintenance Network

The two facilities are being developed as part of MRVC’s wider programme to strengthen EMU maintenance capacity alongside the augmentation of existing facilities. The expansion is aimed at creating adequate infrastructure for the gradual increase and modernisation of Mumbai’s suburban rolling stock fleet.

With the suburban network expected to handle additional rolling stock in the coming years, the availability of adequate carshed capacity will be crucial. The Bhivpuri and Vangaon facilities are therefore expected to play a key role in ensuring that maintenance infrastructure keeps pace with the expansion of Mumbai’s suburban railway system.
