Due cyclonic air circulation, the monsoon activity had intensified in Mumbai and Maharashtra for the last two weeks. However, the region is expected get relief from heavy downpour as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has as downgraded the weather warnings. Mumbai metropolitan regions - Thane, Palghar and Raigad are placed under Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall at isolated places for July 14. For the rest of the days of the week, no warning is issued.
While for Mumbai, no warning is issued for the entire week and the city will experience routine monsoon activity of light to moderate rains. As per the local weather forecast for the next 48 hours says, 'Partly cloudy sky with intermittent light to moderate rain in city and suburbs. Occasional gusty winds very likely. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be 30°C and 25°C.'
Mumbai has already received almost 30% if it's average seasonal rainfall. As of July 12 morning, the city area as received 595 mm rainfall, the eastern suburbs have received 700 mm rainfall and the western suburbs have received 628 mm rainfall.
With the heavy downpour in last few weeks, including the catchment areas, the lakes supplying water to Mumbai have crossed 75% of its total storage capacity. This is considered as one of the earliest- when the lakes have crossed 75% in mid-July. On the same day last year, the lake levels were 25% and in 2023 were 28%.
Last week, the BMC also opened two gates of the Modak Sagar reservoir as it overflowed.
