Major Fire Breaks Out At Turbhe Dumping Ground In Navi Mumbai; Firefighting Ops Underway

Navi Mumbai: A major fire erupted at the Turbhe dumping ground in earlier today, triggering thick plumes of smoke across the surrounding areas. A large pile of of ashes were burned in the fire.

According to a report by Loksatta, the firefighting teams were rushed to the spot soon after the blaze was reported. Operations to douse the flames are currently underway. Fire brigade from Nerul, Koparkhairane, Airoli, Vashi, Belapur as well as MIDC department are trying to extinguish the fire. 

The Vashi fire brigade told Loksatta that the fire was reported at 5 am. So far no casualties have been reported. The reason of the fire is yet to be known.

This is not the first time that a blaze has broken out at the Turbhe dumping ground. The site had earlier caught fire on February 11 2025, as well as on February 4, 2023, raising concerns over recurring incidents at the landfill. According to reports, the fire in 2023 took eleven hours to douse.

After frequent fire incidents at Turbhe Dumping ground, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in 2023 had decided to install CCTV cameras to keep a check on the movement of people. A total of 50 CCTV cameras were installed at the dumping ground.

Indira Nagar, Turbhe Store and Hanuman Nagar are located nearby the dumping ground and residents were suffocating due to smoke. The thick smoke was unbearable for residents. Since the dumping ground is near industrial units of MIDC, if a spark from the fire site travelled to these units, it could have been a disaster.

While the security at the landfill site claimed that no one entered, locals claimed that anti-social elements got access to the site easily.
