Mumbai: The Maharashtra state government has appointed senior IAS officer Dinesh T Waghmare as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). This decision followed the state's cabinet granting Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis full authority to propose candidates for the CEC role.

The CEC position had been vacant since the retirement of the previous officer, UPS Madan. Waghmare will assume the charges immediately.
