Mumbai: The government of Maharashtra has suggested renaming Islampur city in the Taluka Walwa of Sangli district to Ishwarpur. The state Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal made this announcement in the Assembly. This proposal will be forwarded to the Central Government for ultimate approval. Minister Bhujbal informed the Assembly that the local level had been calling for this name change for quite some time.

The minister stated that the choice to rename Islampur to Ishwarpur was made considering the cultural and historical significance of the region. Besides this, Chandrakant Patil, another minister from the Fadnavis administration, informed the Legislative Council that the state has proposed to the central government to rename Islampur in the Sangli district as Ishwarpur.

Earlier, the Shiv Sena under Uddhav Thackeray had repeatedly requested to rename Islampur as Ishwarpur. Following the renaming of Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena brought up the matter of Islampur.

The suggestion to rename Islampur is viewed as a move in the same direction. Residents and leaders assert that renaming Islampur to Ishwarpur will enhance the region's cultural heritage. Nevertheless, the ultimate choice regarding this matter will rely on the authorization of the national government.
