Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Launches First Mobile Forensic Van To Enhance Crime Detection

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has rolled out significant measures aimed at boosting conviction rates and preventing evidence tampering in criminal cases.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiled 21 state-of-the-art forensic vans across the state, emphasising that Maharashtra is the first in India to launch such an initiative. The state plans to deploy a total of 259 forensic vans, equipped to collect critical evidence such as blood and DNA samples, particularly in serious cases like rape.

The newly launched mobile forensic units are expected to enhance the investigative process, making it more accurate and efficient.

The vans are designed to use advanced 'blockchain' technology, ensuring the security and transparency of the evidence collection process. All gathered evidence will be uploaded onto a crime scene application, with barcodes assigned to maintain its integrity.

Each van will be staffed with scientific experts and assistants, and will be equipped with kits for collecting evidence related to explosive substances and cyber crimes. Additionally, CCTV cameras are installed in the vans to monitor and oversee the collection process, ensuring that all activities are properly documented.

These mobile forensic vans are part of an integrated system that includes forensic kits, experts and a crime scene application.

The launch event was attended by several key officials, including Dr Pankaj Bhoyar, Minister of State for Home (Rural Affairs), chief secretary Sujata Saunik, Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, principal secretary Ashwini Bhide and others.
