Kharghar Woman Battling Fever And Breathlessness Recovers After TB Diagnosis & Multidisciplinary Treatment

Navi Mumbai: A 47-year-old woman from Kharghar who had been suffering from persistent fever, cough, breathlessness, weakness and loss of appetite for more than two weeks was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis and acute kidney injury after her condition continued to worsen despite consultations with multiple doctors. Timely diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment at a Navi Mumbai Hospital helped her recover and resume her daily routine.

Persistent symptoms lead to hospital admission and detailed medical evaluation

The woman, identified as Asha Verma (name changed), was admitted to the hospital on February 27. Initial investigations revealed a low platelet count, compromised kidney function and signs of infection. An HRCT scan showed lung involvement along with multiple enlarged lymph nodes in the chest and neck, raising suspicion of tuberculosis.

“The symptoms can initially be mistaken for a common infection. However, the presence of infection, kidney stress and enlarged lymph nodes raised suspicion of tuberculosis. Timely evaluation was crucial to stabilise her condition and proceed with further diagnosis,” said Dr Manish Pendse, General Physician from NewEra Hospital in Vashi.

Bronchoscopy and biopsy confirm tuberculosis diagnosis after further testing

The patient underwent bronchoscopy on February 28, during which samples were collected from her lower airways for testing. Further evaluation through PET-CT confirmed lymph node involvement. Doctors then performed a right supraclavicular lymph node excision biopsy on March 2 to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other serious conditions.

“The enlarged supraclavicular lymph node warranted a surgical excision biopsy. The procedure was uneventful and the patient remained stable. Such biopsies are important when imaging findings are unclear, as they help determine the appropriate treatment,” said Dr Ram Khare, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeon.

Anti-tuberculosis therapy begins as doctors manage kidney complications

GeneXpert testing subsequently confirmed tuberculosis, following which Anti-Koch’s Therapy was started on March 4 for six months. Simultaneously, the patient’s acute kidney injury was managed through controlled fluid intake, supportive medication and close monitoring of kidney function.

Her kidney parameters gradually improved with treatment. Her fever subsided, breathing improved, appetite returned and her strength increased. The surgical wound also healed well.

“Following treatment, the patient showed steady improvement. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are critical, particularly when tuberculosis is associated with complications such as kidney injury,” said Dr Jaspreet Singh, Pulmonologist.

The patient was discharged in stable condition at a weight of 65 kg and was advised to continue medication and return for follow-up after 10 days.

“I was very worried as my symptoms were not improving and I felt extremely weak. The doctors explained everything clearly and supported me throughout the treatment. Slowly, I started feeling better," said the patient.
