Kalyan: A dispute over the treatment of a pregnant woman at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)-run Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli escalated into an alleged assault on doctors and medical staff, leading to the arrest of Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) corporator Ramesh Mhatre and a prolonged legal battle over his bail.
The incident began on July 6 when doctors at the hospital advised the family of a pregnant woman to shift her to another facility as no NICU bed was available. Mhatre reached the hospital along with his supporters following the dispute. Three doctors and other medical staff were assaulted during the incident.
The assault was captured on CCTV, and footage of the incident subsequently went viral.
Police case and arrests
On July 7, the Vishnunagar police registered a case against Mhatre and his supporters. Three of his associates were arrested initially under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act.
Mhatre was arrested on July 8. He was subsequently admitted to hospital after his health deteriorated.
Bail granted, then cancelled
On July 14, a Kalyan court granted Mhatre bail on a bond of ₹50,000.
However, the Bombay High Court cancelled the bail on July 18 and directed him to surrender by July 19. Mhatre surrendered as directed and was remanded to judicial custody.
High Court grants bail again
On August 7, the Bombay High Court granted Mhatre bail once again, but imposed a stringent condition barring him from entering Maharashtra until the commencement of the trial.
The High Court also directed that the case be heard by a fast-track court.
