Mumbai: The Government Railway Police (GRP) recorded the statement of a second eyewitness on Saturday in connection with the death of a passenger who was allegedly pushed from a moving local train. The funeral of 62-year-old Cajetan Denis Peris was held at Sacred Heart Church in Santacruz on Saturday.

Second eyewitness statement recorded

A police officer said the second eyewitness is deaf and mute. He provided his statement in writing. According to the GRP, the second eyewitness corroborated the sequence of events narrated by the first eyewitness.

The accused allegedly boarded the local train at Lower Parel station at around 1.07 pm, while the deceased boarded at Mahim. After boarding the train, Peris allegedly questioned the accused about occupying a seat in a compartment reserved for persons with disabilities.

Scuffle leads to passenger death

An argument then broke out between the two, which escalated into a scuffle. The incident took place near the train door. During the scuffle, the accused allegedly pushed Peris out of the moving train.

The accused, Amajad Safriddin Shaikh, 48, is currently in police custody.
