BMC Installs 236 CCTV Cameras On Mumbai Coastal Road |
After multiple incidents of breakdowns and accidents, the BMC has completed installing 236 CCTV cameras along the Mumbai Coastal Road (south). This advanced surveillance and traffic monitoring system instantly alerts the control room in case of accidents, enabling quick emergency response. It also records daily traffic data including vehicle count, types, and speed violations supporting both road safety and data-driven traffic management, claims the civic official.
The 10.58-km Mumbai Coastal Road, stretching from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, has been opening to traffic in phases since last year. The final segment a 550-metre Vehicular Underpass (VUP) connecting Prabhadevi to Worli was opened on May 30. The entire stretch is expected to be fully operational 24/7 by July, boosting traffic flow across the corridor. However, since February, there have been 38 incidents of vehicle breakdowns and four accidents, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of emergency response measures within the tunnel.
The four-lane Coastal Road narrows to two lanes within the 3.4-km twin tunnel, creating a bottleneck. Vehicle breakdowns and reckless speeding especially by high-end cars have led to major disruptions and accidents. To address these issues, authorities have implemented an advanced surveillance system for real-time incident detection and rapid emergency response.
"The system will help address frequent complaints about over speeding, racing, and noise disturbances along the coastal road. The real-time data provided by the cameras is shared with both the BMC administration and the Mumbai Traffic Police for effective traffic management," said a senior civic official.
