Who Is Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth, The IAF’s First Woman Fighter Pilot To Become A ‘Top Gun’?

Indian Air Force (IAF) Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth has scripted history once again by becoming the first woman fighter pilot to complete the prestigious Fighter Combat Leader (FCL) course at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) in Gwalior. She became the first woman fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force (IAF) to earn the prestigious 'Top Gun' title. The achievement marks another milestone in her remarkable career and highlights the growing role of women in India's combat aviation.

Bihar's daughter

Born in Darbhanga, Bihar, Bhawana Kanth completed her schooling in Begusarai before pursuing a degree in Medical Electronics Engineering from BMS College of Engineering in Bengaluru. Inspired by a passion for flying and serving the nation, she joined the Indian Air Force through the Air Force Academy.

In 2016, Bhawana was commissioned into the IAF as part of the first-ever batch of women fighter pilots, alongside Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh. The induction was a landmark moment, as women had only recently been allowed to enter the fighter stream on an experimental basis.

Combat aviation milestone

She flies the MiG-21 Bison, one of the IAF's most demanding fighter aircraft. In 2019, Bhawana became the first woman fighter pilot to qualify for combat missions during the day after completing all operational requirements. She later participated in the 2021 Republic Day flypast, becoming the first woman fighter pilot to be part of the parade's aerial display.

Over the years, Bhawana Kanth has become an inspiration for countless young women aspiring to join the armed forces.
