What Makes Hyderabad’s Charminar Special? US Envoy Sergio Gor Visits Historic Monument

United States Ambassador to India-designate Sergio Gor on Monday visited Hyderabad’s iconic Charminar and enjoyed a cup of tea, calling the historic monument a "magnificent symbol" of the city's rich history. The historic monument, located in the heart of Hyderabad’s Old City, has stood as a symbol of the city’s rich history, architecture and cultural heritage for centuries.

The Charminar was built in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah and is believed to have been constructed to commemorate the founding of Hyderabad. The monument’s name comes from its four towering minarets, with “Char” meaning four and “Minar” referring to towers.

What makes Charminar special?

One of the most distinctive features of the Charminar is its architectural design. The monument combines elements of Islamic, Persian and Indian architecture, making it an important example of the Qutb Shahi architectural tradition.

The structure has four grand arches, each opening towards an important road. Its four minarets rise prominently above the monument, giving Charminar its instantly recognisable appearance.

The monument is also closely associated with Hyderabad’s cultural identity. The bustling area surrounding Charminar is home to historic markets, traditional food outlets and famous shopping destinations. Laad Bazaar, located near the monument, is particularly popular for its colourful bangles, jewellery and traditional items.

US Ambassador visits the iconic Char Minar on Monday, August 24, 2026. "Wonderful to visit Hyderabad's iconic Charminar, a magnificent symbol of the city's rich history!" Gor said in a post on X. Before that he visited Thiksey Monastery in Ladakh and Pari Mahal and Dal Lake in Jammu & Kashmir.

Another notable feature is the mosque located on the upper floor of the Charminar. The monument also offers visitors a glimpse into the architectural and religious history of the Qutb Shahi era.

Over the years, Charminar has become much more than a historical structure. It is widely regarded as a symbol of Hyderabad, appearing in photographs, films, artwork and tourism campaigns associated with the city.

Today, the monument remains one of Telangana’s biggest tourist attractions and an important heritage site. Sergio Gor’s visit once again puts the spotlight on Charminar’s enduring historical and cultural significance, nearly five centuries after it was built.
