Raksha Bandhan 2026: World’s Biggest Rakhi To Adorn Lord Jagannath In Odisha On Gamha Purnima

Raksha Bandhan is one of the most sacred Hindu festivals which celebrates the bond of brothers and sisters. The auspicious day is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shravana, which typically falls in the Gregorian month of August.

Every year Odisha celebrates Raksha Bandhan, known locally as Gamha Purnima, with a unique and centuries-old tradition dedicated to Lord Jagannath. This year Raksha Bandhan is marked by the same old tradition. On August 28, 2026, a specially crafted giant Rakhi, which is also described as World's biggest Rakhi will be offered to Lord Jagannath as part of the festive rituals.

Giant Rakhi crafted by local artisans

The highlight of the celebration is the preparation of the enormous rakhis for the deities. These rakhis are traditionally handcrafted by skilled artisans from the Patara community, who have been associated with the craft for generations.

The giant rakhis are made using colourful pieces of cloth and other traditional materials. The design features concentric circular patterns, with different layers carefully arranged to create the distinctive appearance of the sacred thread.

The craftsmanship is not merely decorative but reflects Odisha’s rich textile and cultural heritage. Artisans put considerable effort into preparing the rakhis ahead of the festival.

Significance of Gamha Purnima

Gamha Purnima holds special significance in Odisha as it celebrates the sacred bond between siblings. According to tradition, Goddess Subhadra ties large sacred rakhis to her brothers, Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra, on this auspicious occasion.

Gamha Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana. Apart from being observed as Raksha Bandhan, the festival also marks the birth anniversary of Lord Balabhadra, the elder brother of Lord Jagannath and Goddess Subhadra.

The festival coincides with Balbhadra Jayanti

Lord Balabhadra is traditionally associated with agriculture and farming. Balabhadra Jayanti, often referred to as Balarama Jayanti, is the holy birth anniversary of Lord Balarama. It is observed on the Sashti tithi of the Bhadrapada month (or Shravana Purnima in certain traditions). This year Balbhadra Jayanti will coincide with Raksha Bandhan on Friday, August 28.
