Ayurveda's Holistic Remedies For Ear Pain: Natural Relief At Home
Acharya Balkrishnaji, the co-founder of Patanjali Ayurved, suggests simple home remedies to help heal from painful ear troubles.

An earache may seem like a minor inconvenience at first, but the pain can quickly become difficult to ignore, affecting your ability to concentrate, sleep, and go about your daily routine. While ear pain is often linked to infections, blockages, or pressure changes, Ayurveda believes it can also signal a deeper imbalance within the body. Acharya Balkrishnaji, co-founder of Patanjali Ayurved, explains the common causes of earaches and shares Ayurvedic home remedies and Patanjali products that may help provide relief while addressing the underlying issue.
Facing Earaches and Pain
Earaches and pain can occur when the ear’s delicate structures, such as the eustachian tubes or nearby facial nerves, become infected or compressed.
Common causes of earaches include outer or inner ear infections that lead to inflammation, pressure behind the eardrum, fluid accumulation, ear blockages, barotrauma (sudden changes in air pressure), and irritation caused by foreign objects.
Referred pain, on the other hand, occurs when ear pain or discomfort is caused by issues in the throat, jaw, or teeth, which are interconnected. It may result from dental problems, throat infections, or sinus infections.
Ayurveda describes earache, or Karnasoola, as a result of a dosha imbalance that obstructs the ear’s subtle channels, or strotas. It occurs due to the aggravation of Vata, which causes sharp, dry pain; Kapha, which causes blockages and sticky fluid accumulation; and Pitta, which causes irritation and inflammation.
Along with lifestyle modifications, Acharya Balkrishnaji also suggests simple Ayurvedic home remedies to relieve earaches and pain. Additionally, Patanjali offers products that may help address these issues.
4 Ayurvedic Remedies to Treat Earache and Pain
Onions: Acharya Balkrishnaji recommends a simple onion-based remedy for ear pain. “Chop the onions and warm them lightly in a pan. Once warmed, extract the juice and put four drops into each ear. It can provide relief from earache, no matter how severe it may be,” he says.
Garlic and Sesame Oil: Crush two to three garlic cloves and heat them in a small amount of sesame oil until they turn slightly red. Allow the mixture to cool, then strain it into a clean bottle. Applying two to three drops to the outer ear may help ease discomfort, as garlic is known for its antimicrobial properties.
Compress: One of the safest ways to ease an earache is by using a hot or cold compress. It can help soothe the painful area while improving blood circulation. Apply the compress to the affected area for about 10 minutes at a time. If using a hot compress, ensure that it is warm and not excessively hot.
Cloves: Cloves are known for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, which may help alleviate ear pain and infections. Lightly fry a clove in a spoonful of sesame oil until the oil comes to a boil. Allow the mixture to cool, then strain the oil. Place a few drops of the filtered oil into the ear. Repeat this remedy for a day or two, or until the ache subsides.
Patanjali also offers products that may help relieve earaches and discomfort. Patanjali’s Divya Eargrit Gold (12 Gms) is formulated to support ear health, reduce internal ear inflammation, and help manage earaches. It contains ingredients such as cinnamon, tejpatra, nagkeshar, giloy, clove, amla, arjun, jawa, turmeric, neem, nirgundi, and shilajit.
Alternatively, Patanjali Eargrit Eardrop (15 ml) helps relieve earaches, reduce inflammation, and address concerns such as earwax buildup. It contains Ayurvedic herbs including Sudarshan, apamarg, tulsi, bhringaraj, fenugreek, dhatura, neem, and turmeric.
