Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a remarkable medical milestone, Indore created history on Friday with the delivery of the heaviest newborn ever recorded in a government facility in Madhya Pradesh.

A healthy baby girl weighing 5.43 kg was born via Caesarean section at the PC Sethi Civil Hospital, setting a new state record.

The 24-year-old mother, Reeta, arrived at the hospital for her first delivery, presenting a high-risk pregnancy. She was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia, dangerously high blood pressure (160/110), generalised body swelling, and was carrying a baby significantly larger than average.

Her weight was over 90 kg, and due to her short stature and the medical risks involved, doctors ruled out a normal delivery.

The surgery was conducted by gynaecologist Dr Komal Vijayvargiya, with assistance of anaesthesia expert Dr Sunita Bhatnagar. Speaking about the complexity of the case, Dr Vijayvargiya said, “It was a highly complicated and high-risk delivery. We are still monitoring the baby’s vitals, but both mother and child are currently stable and expected to be discharged soon.”

Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Madhav Hasani visited the hospital to personally congratulate the doctors and staff. “This delivery is a powerful example of the high-quality maternal care now available under government welfare schemes like Janani Suraksha Yojana,” he said.

Dr Hasani added that institutional deliveries are crucial in managing high-risk pregnancies and ensuring the safety of both mother and child. He praised the medical team for handling this challenging case with such expertise, highlighting that services of this level, once accessible only in private hospitals, are now being offered free of cost in government facilities.

“A healthy baby is the greatest joy for any family, and safe motherhood is the foundation of a healthy society,” said Dr Hasani. “This case is a proud moment for Indore and a clear indicator of the government’s commitment to accessible, free, and quality maternal healthcare.”
