Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A bus driver working at IIM-Indore was duped of Rs 20,000 by a conman claiming to be the complainant’s acquaintance over the phone, police said on Sunday. The accused later also tried to dupe the complainant’s nephew.
Additional DCP (crime) Aalok Sharma said that Sunil Dhanera, a resident of Kamla Nagar area, received a call from an unidentified number with the caller identifying himself as one Yadav ji from IIM-I. Dhanera knew someone by that surname so he didn’t suspect foul play.
While talking, the caller claimed he had sent Rs 20,000 to Dhanera’s bank account, asking the latter to transfer the same amount to him through a UPI app. The alleged conman even sent a message, which turned out to be fake, of credit on the chat box of the UPI app.
Later, he sent three links to Dhanera, asking him to transfer the amount via the same. Dhanera complied, only to realise that while his money was deducted, he didn’t receive it back, as was promised.
Dhanera confided in his nephew Anuj who called back the alleged conman, asking him to return the money. At which, the alleged scamster tried to dupe him as well, claiming he will send a UPI link, clicking on which will credit the amount in his account but Anuj didn’t fall for his tricks.
Dhanera then complained with the cyber helpdesk at Rau police station. The police said they have frozen the bank account to which Dhanera transferred the amount and are investigating the fraud.
