Kolkata: Chodup Lepcha, a constable of the fifth battalion of Kolkata Police who was posted outside Bangladesh High Commission building at Park Circus in Kolkata, on Friday suddenly started open firing with his service revolver in the afternoon.
According to several eyewitnesses, Lepcha suddenly openly fired 10-15 rounds of bullets which injured two people and killed one lady who was crossing that area on a bike.
Later, Lepcha also shot himself and died.
According to Commissioner of police Vineet Goyal who had visited the place after the incident said that the cause of Lepcha’s depression will be investigated.
“Lepcha’s house is in Kalimpong and he joined the force last year. He was on leave and joined back duty on Thursday. Maybe he was depressed. Everything will be investigated,” said Goyal.
The police also stated that Lepcha had 40 rounds of bullets while he joined the duty on Friday.
Other police personnel who were on duty with Lepcha said that he went out of the police kiosk saying that he was going to take a ‘tea break’.
According to an eyewitness Md. Ansari, Lepcha entered a bylane near his place of duty before he started open firing.
“He had entered a bylane and started asking people whether they had detained any of his colleagues at their residence and then after coming out of the lane he started open firing,” said Ansari.
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has shown his concern over this untoward incident and sought a report from the Chief Secretary.
Meanwhile, the deceased woman has been identified as Reema Singh. She was a resident of Howrah and was the only breadwinner of the family.
According to the deceased woman’s mother, Reema was supposed to get married soon.
“We have several debts and my daughter was the only breadwinner as my husband doesn’t do much to run the livelihood. She was about to get married and now everything is gone,” said the deceased woman’s mother.
