West Bengal: CID Team Reaches Midnapore Medical College And Hospital To Probe Death Due To Saline

Kolkata: Following state government’s order CID team on Tuesday had visited Midnapore Medical College and Hospital to probe the saline death incident.

The two-member team of the state sleuths along with a DSP rank officer were seen talking to the doctors, nurses, PGT and others when the death of a woman happened due to the saline intake and four women became critical.

The three women who were shifted to SSKM on Sunday evening continue to remain critical even on Tuesday as mentioned by SSKM director Monimoy Bandhopadhyay.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Health department has issued a memo to all Chief Medical Officers of health in the districts and principals of all medical colleges to stop using Ringer’s Lactate (RL) saline.

The order comes after a 13-member expert team was formed by the health department to investigate the death of a woman due to saline.

The memo had instructed officials to “ensure total stoppage of the existing stock of Compound Sodium Lactate Injection (RL) supplied by Paschim Banga Pharmaceutical Pvt Ltd in his/her jurisdiction.”

The memo also mentioned that the stock of saline bottles manufactured by the Paschim Banga Pharmaceutical Pvt Ltd should be immediately removed from all the hospitals.

On Monday after a meeting over the issue, chief secretary Manoj Pant mentioned that after the investigation strict action will be taken against those who have committed the mistake.

On the other hand, junior doctors while talking to the media said, “Serious allegations are being given to the doctors for alleged lapses in the treatment. But no one is seeing that the company that had manufactured the saline was banned by Karnataka in March last year.”
