Uttar Pradesh Forest Department Installs Over 270 Km Of Fencing To Curb Human-Wildlife Conflict

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Forest Department has installed 272 km of fencing, 231 km of chain-link and 41 km of solar, across forest regions between 2023–24 and 2024–25 to curb human-wildlife conflicts.

The initiative includes training "Bagh Mitras" (community volunteers) near tiger reserves and the Etawah Lion Safari to coordinate awareness programs and emergency responses. Advanced tracking equipment, such as drones, GPS devices, and camera traps, has been procured through the State Disaster Mitigation Fund for real-time wildlife movement monitoring. In 2023–24, 125 km of chain-link and 21 km of solar fencing were installed, followed by 106 km and 20 km, respectively, in 2024–25.

The barriers aim to reduce crop damage, human casualties, and livestock predation. Regular patrolling and technology-assisted surveillance are being used to track wildlife activity near inhabited areas.

The measures are part of broader efforts to balance conservation with community safety in forest-adjacent regions.
