TMC Minister To Urge Election Commission Against Online Voter Registration In Bengal

Kolkata: A day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized online registration of new voter cards, Trinamool Congress (TMC) Parliamentary Affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay on Thursday said that after holding a meeting, he will visit Election Commission of India and will give them a letter urging not to register new voters of Bengal online.

“I will ask them to register manually and get the voter verified before putting the name on the list. If they don’t listen, then we will go for protests along with the common people of the state,” said Chattopadhyay.

Countering the claims of Chattopadhyay, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that it is the work of district magistrates to put the name of new voters.

“We have caught 16 lakh fake voters and before the Assembly elections next year we will ensure that these names are cancelled,” added Adhikari.

Notably, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday slammed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and alleged that the party came to power in Haryana, Delhi due to votes of fake voters.

“In Bengal some people are sitting in several constituencies to make non-residents of Bengal the voters of this state. The election is conducted through central force. We will not let fake voters in Bengal,” Mamata had mentioned.

Political analyst Biswanath Chakraborty stated that the names of new voters are done mostly by the people of the ruling party.
