Chandigarh: The Punjab government is set to extend the detention of Khalistan supporter and Khadoor Sahib Member of Parliament, Amritpal Singh, 32, under the National Security Act (NSA) in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam, for another year.
The Punjab police had not extended the detention of nine of Amritpal’s aides - also jailed along with him under NSA in 2023 - and recently brought them back to Punjab where they faced several charges; they are Basant Singh, Bhagwant Bajekhana, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Sarabjit Kalsi, Gurinder Pal Singh, Harjeet Singh, Kulwant Singh, Pappalpreet Singh and Varinderpal Johal.
The Sikh radical leader Amritpal and his aides were booked on charges of spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and disrupting public servants from carrying out their duty.
According to sources, Amritpal’s detention has been extended by another year as there are some evidences that he still continued to be a threat to the law and order of the state. The extension in one-year detention is said to have been made by the home department on the recommendation of the Amritsar district magistrate (DM) in the context.
Sources said that the DM’s report was given on the basis of police and intelligence departments’ report following which the decision was taken after deliberation by state home and justice departments with the advisory board’s recommendation.
