The recent double suicide of a Kerala couple in a luxury hotel has left many perplexed. What makes this case particularly unsettling is that the same couple had attempted suicide in another hotel just three months prior. This incident occurred during the festive season of Onam, adding to its eerie nature.
The couple had recently celebrated their daughter's grand wedding at the same luxurious hotel, making it even more surprising that they chose such surroundings to end their lives.
Couple checked in during Onam festivities, stayed in their room for majority of time
A couple, Sugathan, aged 70, and his wife Sunila, aged 60, checked into a hotel during the Onam festivities. Hotel staff and the police noted that there were no apparent signs of unusual behavior from them, except for the extended time spent in their room.
Just a few days before their tragic act, the couple had joined in the Onam celebrations like any other guests. They dressed in traditional attire and enjoyed an Onam feast.
Hotel staff became worried when Sugathan and Sunila didn't respond to room cleaning service calls. Their lack of communication led the staff to contact the police. Upon entering the room, the police discovered the lifeless bodies of the couple, along with a suicide note revealing their financial difficulties and a plea not to burden their daughter.
Sugathan's financial troubles began with a property purchase and subsequent loss in Malayinkeezhu three years ago. His daughter's wedding and business struggles added to his distress, eventually leading to what the police describe as a descent into depression, though there's no independent confirmation of his clinical condition.
Notably, the couple had previously attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills in a different hotel. However, prompt intervention by the hotel staff sent them to a hospital, thwarting their initial attempt.
