'India Will Continue To Support Democratic Bangladesh': PM Modi Congratulates Tarique Rahman On BNP’s Decisive Win
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated BNP chief Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a decisive mandate in the 13th general elections. In a post on X, Modi said India would continue to support a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh and looked forward to strengthening bilateral ties. The BNP-led coalition crossed the two-thirds majority mark in Parliament.

New Delhi/Dhaka: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive mandate in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, marking a historic political comeback after 25 years.
Taking to X, PM Modi said, “I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership.”
He added, “India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.”
BNP Set For Historic Return After 25 Years
The BNP is on course for a landmark return to power after nearly 25 years, having crossed the crucial two-thirds majority mark in the 13th general election of Bangladesh.
According to the latest reports, the BNP-led coalition is leading in 209 of the 300 parliamentary seats. The BNP alone is ahead in 165 seats, comfortably outpacing its rivals.
Its closest challenger, Jamaat-e-Islami, is leading in 62 seats.
Tarique Rahman Emerges As Central Figure
Tarique Rahman has emerged as the central figure in the landslide victory, leading in both his constituencies Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17.
Senior BNP leader and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has also delivered a commanding performance, securing a massive lead of nearly 2.5 lakh votes in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, according to a report by The Daily Star.
The sweeping mandate signals a major political shift in Bangladesh, with India expressing readiness to work closely with the new leadership to further strengthen bilateral ties.
