The Madras High Court on Thursday ordered the Tamil Nadu police to file a case against Tamil Nadu Minister K. Ponmudy for his remarks on women and religious denominations.
Issuing a stern warning to the state police, the High Court said that if it fails to file an FIR, it should be prepared to face contempt charges, PTI reported.
Notably, Tamil Nadu Minister Ponmudy made a controversial speech at an event held in Villupuram on April 6, where he mentioned Saivism and Vaishnavism in an anecdote involving sexual innuendo.
Ponmudy allegedly narrated a vulgar story involving sexual positions and the two sects of Hinduism.
After his speech went viral, he faced criticism from opposition leaders as well as from his own party members.
Following the backlash, the DMK on April 11 sacked Ponmudy from the post of party deputy general secretary.
Before the party took action, DMK MP Kanimozhi condemned his remarks on social media and said, “Minister Ponmudy’s recent speech is unacceptable. Regardless of the reason for the speech, such vulgar remarks are condemnable.”
