A political dispute in Ballia has escalated over the opening of the newly constructed Katthal Nala bridge on NH-31. BSP MLA Umeshankar Singh has demanded full disclosure from the UP government regarding the bridge’s inauguration, alleging procedural lapses and irregularities.
Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh responded sharply to Umeshankar’s earlier remarks, challenging him to present any evidence in the upcoming Assembly session. The minister maintained that his objection was not to the bridge’s construction but to its opening without National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) clearance and formal handover.

He said that the Public Works Department (PWD) opened the bridge on August 5 without approval, even as overhead cables were hanging and questions remained over whether the contractor had received completion certification. Umeshankar Singh, in previous statements, accused the minister of misconduct and warned of revealing further details in the Assembly.

Local sources indicate that the initial dispute began on July 5, when the PWD unexpectedly opened the bridge late at night. At the time, the minister accused officials of acting under the MLA’s influence.

The matter has now shifted from an infrastructure issue to a broader political confrontation. Umeshankar has reiterated that his focus is on ensuring public safety and accountability, urging the government to investigate potential violations before any official opening. Residents and political observers describe the clash as part of an ongoing struggle for influence in Ballia’s local politics. With the Assembly session approaching, both sides are preparing for a public showdown over the bridge controversy.
