Guwahati: In a major crackdown on inter-state drug trafficking, Assam Police on Monday seized 670 kg of ganja from the cargo terminal of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati and arrested four persons allegedly involved in the racket. Police suspect the operation is linked to an international supply network.
The seizure was made after staff at the airport's cargo terminal became suspicious while scanning 111 parcels booked for courier and alerted Azara Police.
Acting on the information, a police team led by DCP (West) Bolin Dewri launched an investigation and recovered nearly 670 kg of ganja concealed inside all 111 parcels.
“The consignment had been sourced from the Mairang area in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district and transported to Guwahati through Jorabat. The parcels were to be dispatched by courier to several states, including Punjab, Delhi and Haryana,” Dewri said.
Police also found that the accused had booked the consignments using the names and addresses of deceased persons, allegedly to avoid detection.
The four arrested have been identified as Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Roman (22) of Tripura, who was detained at the airport, and Phalbakstar Parlong (32), Alvinestar Siem (21) and Crush Dokhar (40), all residents of Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district.
“Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Roman is the main accused. He is basically from Bangladesh. He sent the consignments to Meghalaya, wherefrom the accused used Indian Post to sent it to Guwahati by train and then to other states,” he added.
Police said one of the arrested persons was working as the driver transporting the consignment.
A case, numbered 87/2026, has been registered at Azara Police Station against the four accused under Section 20(b)(ii)(C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Police said the investigation is continuing to trace the wider network behind the operation, including those who financed the consignment and others allegedly involved in transporting it through Guwahati.
