Sanguem: The Selaulim dam at Sanguem began to overflow from the duckbill spillway at its crest on Friday morning when the water level at the dam reached 41.15 metres.

With heavy rains in the taluka over the last few days, the reservoir got filled to the brim five days earlier as compared to last year, informed Assistant Engineer Jason Menezes, attached to the Water Resource Department office in Sanguem.

Menezes further informed that the total rainfall in the area as of Friday morning was 1599 mm, which is 314 mm more compared to the same day last year, resulting in water overflowing from the duckbill spillway at its crest five days earlier.

The total water storage capacity of the dam is 234 million cubic metres, informed the official.

Menezes also informed that while entry to people at the dam site is banned for security reasons, visitors are permitted to visit the Botanical Garden on the other side of the dam area.

Ever since the construction of the Selaulim dam, people would flock to experience the enchanting beauty of the overflowing waters at the dam.

However, entry to the dam site has been banned for since the last two years and there has been considerable resentment among the public.
